Spring cleaning is the perfect time to check those hidden plumbing spots that don’t usually get much attention—like behind your appliances and under the sinks. Small leaks and moisture build-up in these areas can go unnoticed for months, but they can lead to bigger problems like water damage, mould, or even flooding.

Here’s what to look for, where to check, and what to do if something seems off.

Where to Check

1. Under Kitchen and Bathroom Sinks

Open the cabinet doors and take a close look around the pipes and along the cabinet floor. Check for water stains, moisture, corrosion, or a musty smell. These are often signs of a slow leak.

2. Behind the Washing Machine

Carefully pull your washing machine away from the wall (just enough to take a peek). Inspect the water supply hoses for cracks, bulges, or rust. Make sure the connections are tight and dry. Washing machine hoses should be replaced every five years.

3. Behind the Dishwasher

If your dishwasher is smelling musty or there’s water pooling near the base, it could be leaking from a hose or the connection. You may be able to check behind the kickplate or panel, but if you’re unsure, it’s best to have a plumber take a look.

4. Behind the Fridge (If It Has a Water Line)

Refrigerators with water dispensers or ice makers are another common spot for hidden leaks. Check the water line, connections, and floor behind the fridge for damp spots or water damage.

5. Utility Rooms and Basements

Take a walk around any utility spaces. Look around your water heater, sump pump, or exposed pipes for signs of dripping, rust, or puddles. Even a small leak here can cause big issues over time.

What to Look For

• Puddles or damp areas

• Warped wood or bubbling paint

• Rusted or corroded pipes

• Musty or sour smells

• Dripping or running water sounds when no water is being used

What to Do If You Find a Problem

If you notice anything suspicious, here’s what you can do:

• Tighten any loose fittings if you’re comfortable doing so, and the fitting is accessible

• Replace cracked or bulging hoses, especially behind the washer. The hose to your washer should be swapped out every 5 years

• Clean and dry the area to help prevent mould and mildew

• Give us a call (778)764-1149 if you’re not sure where the water is coming from, or if the leak is persistent

Even a small leak can waste hundreds of litres of water and lead to costly repairs if left too long. A quick check during your spring cleaning routine can help catch problems early—and save you stress down the road.
