Clogged drains are one of the most common plumbing issues we see. The good news is, most of them are totally preventable. A few small changes in your day-to-day habits can save you the hassle (and cost) of dealing with a backed up or slow draining kitchen sink.

Here are some tips from The Family Plumbing and Heating to keep your pipes flowing smoothly:

  • Don’t Pour Grease Down the Drain

It might seem harmless when it’s hot and liquid, but once grease cools inside your pipes, it hardens — and that’s where the problems start. It starts to solidify the moment you pour it down there, and over time the grease will build up and narrow your pipes, eventually leading to a full-on clog.

Better option: Pour used grease into a heat-safe container, let it cool and solidify, then throw it in the garbage. It’s a simple switch that can make a huge difference.

  • Keep Coffee Grounds Out of the Sink

Coffee grounds seem like fine little particles, but they don’t break down in water. Instead they clump together and settle into the curves of your plumbing, especially right underneath the kitchen sink.

Better option: Toss them into the compost or garbage instead. It’s better for your plumbing and better for your peace of mind.

  • Scrape Food Scraps Into the Garbage or Compost

Even small bits of food can lead to buildup over time. This is especially true for starchy foods like rice, pasta, and potatoes, which absorb water, swell up, and stick to your pipes.

Better option: Use a sink strainer to catch food bits before they go down the drain, and scrape plates into the garbage or compost bin before rinsing.
